Skin Cancer Facts

Skin cancer is mostly caused by sun exposure, however it is important to note that it can occur on any area of the skin- including non sun exposed areas.
More than 50% of the Australian population will suffer from cancerous or pre-cancerous lesions in their lifetime. However 98% of all skincancer in Australia is curable, with the highest success rate if diagnosed and treated early on. There are 3 main types of skin cancer.

Basal Cell Carcinoma
Appear as superficial red patches, ulcers, "pearly" red nodules, or scar like areas. Over 250,000 are diagnosed in Australia each year. Usually they are not life threatening, however they can be disfiguring if not detected and treated early.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Appear as rapdily developing tender nodules or ulcerative areas. Can be life threatening and disfiguring if not detected and treated early.

Malignant Melanoma
Appear usually as a new changing irregular mole. Are responsible for approximately 1000 deaths in Australia each year.

What should you look for: Any new, irregular or changing skin lesion on any area of the skin should be investigated
